In the Tabasco State Congress, a Morena representative named Charly Valentino Vera proposed to modify article 83 of the Mexican Constitution, so that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador can be re-elected.

This article states that the president of Mexico must remain in office for six years and “in no case, for any reason, may he return to that position.”

However, the legislator pointed out that article 83 of the Carta Magna instead of “Effective suffrage, no  reelection” should say “Effective suffrage, yes to reelection”.

“We cannot put at risk the current well-being of the population. That is why I ask all the courts, of all the chambers to remove article 83, nd chinge it to ‘Effective suffrage, yes to reelection‘, we want President López Obrador for six more years,” stated Charly Valentino Vera on Tuesday September 10th, at the local Congress of the state of Tabasco.

However, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador rejected the representative’s proposal during his morning press conference at the National Palace on Wednesday September 11th.

“I am a Maderista (follower of the ideology of Francisco I, Madero, Mexican president back in 1911 and creator of the phrase “Effective suffrage, no reelection”), so I do not accept reelection, that is why I am doing things the right way during my period, and as I said before, I am not going to re-elect, it is a matter of principles, principles that I am fulfilling,” AMLO declared.
