The governor of Yucatan, Mauricio Vila Dosal talked about the potential of Progreso as a tourist attraction. He said that after attending the “26th Annual FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show”, which was held from October 21st to the 25th, in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico , it was possible to negotiate the arrival of more than 50 cruise ships of the MSC, Disney and Ponant cruise companies to the port of Progreso.

“Today, Progreso is seen as a great strategic port, with the potential to become a major attraction for tourism and international trade,” said the Governor.

Regarding MSC Cruises , Vila Dosal stressed that it is one of the largest maritime companies in the world in terms of cargo, and now they manage cruise ships as well, so he announced that by November 2020, 41 of their cruises will be coming to Yucatan.

MSC Cruises is a global cruise line registered in Switzerland and based in Geneva. It was founded in Naples, Italy in 1989. MSC Cruises is the world’s largest privately held cruise company, employing about 23,500 people worldwide, with offices in 45 countries around the word.

“One of the most important travel companies in the Caribbean which is Disney Cruise Line, will bring a pilot ship in January 2021, and I want to personally ask all our people in Progreso to please contribute to keep the streets clean, to treat tourists respectfully; and to those who provide tourism services, we need you to train your personnel, taking advantage of all the programs made available by the Tourism Secretariat, ” the governor continued.

To promote Progreso as a high level tourist destination, Vila Dosal stated that work is being done to improve the urban image with an investment of 60 million pesos just for the House of Culture (Casa de la Cutura), and added that the Federal government will contribute with 500 million pesos that will be used to rebuild the streets of the port, with underground wiring and other features.

“This economic resource is equivalent to 20 years of public work expenditure, that will be allocated to the city of Progreso, and the City Council will be responsible for its management,” said the governor.

Finally, Vila Dosal publicly thanked the Garbage Collection Union, who have been doing a great job in this coastal municipality to keep it clean. The governor mentioned that the State Government had recently donated 5 garbage trucks, motorcycles and containers to Progreso City Council, in order to improve the garbage collection system and make it more efficient.
