Want to know how to write wedding vows for your future spouse? If you find it a challenge, here are a few helpful tips and advice on writing your own vows.

While it might sound easy to some people, not everyone is skilled at writing, and sometimes it is even harder when you are required to write from the heart. Wedding vows are very important, and even though it would be ideal that everyone knows how to write wedding vows, this isn’t always the case.

Writing your own vows, intimate words to be shared with your loved one in front of your guests, can be quite the undertaking. Being able to sum up your feelings, your relationship and all that you wish for it in just a few lines. This can be quite tasking indeed. If you find this as challenging as some couples do, find below some advice and tips as well as wedding vows examples to help get you started.

Tips for Writing Vows

Below are some tips that can be helpful when you are writing your wedding vows. Traditional wedding vows have a template to follow. However, when you are writing your own vows, you get to decide what to say. Following this guide can help you put your ideas together to come up with one of the best vows ever.

  1. Start early

Whether it’s a groom vows to bride or vice versa, the key is to start early. Don’t wait until the last minute to begin writing your vows. With enough time, at least three weeks before the wedding, you will be able to write, edit and rehearse the vows sufficiently. At this point, don’t bother about how long should vows be, just write.

  1. Write down your thoughts

During the weeks, create drafts, write down things you love about your partner, why you want to spend the rest of your life with them. The promises you want to make to your partner, poems or songs that make you think about them. Whatever comes to your mind about them, write it down.

  1. 3. Reread and rewrite

Once you have a few drafts, you wouldn’t need to ask anyone to help me write my vows. Just take some time to reread and rewrite the words. Summarize what might be too long, take the sentences apart and put them back together again.  You don’t have to include every single thought and emotion in your vows, but they have to be beautiful and mean something to you.

  1. Laugh at yourself

Don’t be afraid of being cheesy, sentimental or funny. Embrace this part as heartfelt words will give even more meaning to your vows. Be able to laugh at yourself, it will serve you well.

  1. Use movies, books or poems for inspiration

If you have any favorite poems or lines from a movie or book that would go well with what you’re trying to say, include these. A simple quote can carry so much meaning and sometimes get a message across more effectively.

  1. Read it out loud

Even though it might look perfect on paper, reading it out loud will give you a better idea of how it will sound. This will help you edit any part that sounds weird or where the grammar just doesn’t flow, and so on.

  1. Don’t rush

Allow time for pauses in your writing. Don’t rush through your vows, or your guests won’t catch what you say. Your partner might not either. So, take it slow and focus on intonation and pauses for comprehension and emotional reactions.

Writing Your Own Vows Examples

If you are still wondering how to write vows for her or for him, below are a few sample vows that can inspire you when writing your own.

  1. “….I am truly blessed to be a part of your life, which as of today becomes our life together. I promise to encourage your dreams, because that is what makes you so unique. I promise to celebrate the joy of every day with you. I promise to stand by your side through life’s most joyous moments and challenging ones. I promise to be kind, patient and forgiving…..

But most of all, I promise to be your true companion always. For one lifetime with you could never be enough.”

  1. “…I vow to be the man that you inspire me to be and the man that you deserve. Finally, I vow to spend every day I have left on this earth showering you with a zealous love and a faithful commitment. A love that many waters cannot quench, a love that floods cannot drown.”
