Murderer of Canadian citizen in Progreso sentenced to 25 years in prison

A man who confessed to the fatal stabbing of a Canadian citizen residing in Progreso has been sentenced to 25 years in prison with no right for parole.

Carlos Ernesto Cobos Polanco, also known as “El Pelon”, could have been sentenced up to 40 years for the murder conviction, but he ultimateñy received the lesser term for a plea deal.

Cobos Polanco, 31, was also was ordered to pay 1.617 million pesos in restitution, Sipse reported.

The body of the 70-year-old victim, who was from Nova Scotia, was found in Allen’s apartment last April. Robbery was thought to be the motive.

The suspect was apprehended on evidence gathered from neighbors and surveillance cameras, police said.

Allen is survived by his partner of 38 years, Herman Savoie. The pair had been near the end of their winter stay in Yucatan, days away from their return to Nova Scotia.
