Mérida, Yucatán, (December 20, 2021).- The so-called “green taxes” should be seen as an opportunity to invest in favor of the environment, said Iván Rodríguez Gasque, president of the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) of Mérida.
According to the interviewee, the approval of these new taxes means a greater tax burden for dozens of companies in the State, although he said that this can be mitigated if taxpayers apply the necessary actions to make their processes less polluting.
-I think the most important thing is that it is a global trend, it must be recognized, it is also national, as there are several states that are doing it. But, the most important thing and how we see it, is that it is a call to invest because there are ways to mitigate this, then, it is a call for the environment – he explained.
It should be remembered that the state Congress approved the collection of two taxes, proposed by the state Executive, one for the emission of gases and the other for the emission of pollutants to the soil and water, which will be applied to some 150 Yucatecan companies classified as pollutants, due to the industrial processes they carry out.
These same taxes generated controversy at the time of the discussion of the fiscal package in the Legislative, although it was confirmed that this will only be charged to companies already registered.
Rodríguez Gasque said that green taxes are not expected to affect the State’s economy while stressing the importance of companies applying actions to mitigate their impact on the environment.
-So that they practically do not have to pay this tax and in one way or another, the effect is less. Undoubtedly, it is not a tax that is given so directly to us because it is focused on the industry but, somehow, it will be reflected a little in inflation. We do not think it is so significant but I think it is a call for investment – he concluded.
