Mérida, Yucatán, (December 8, 2021).-Despite the imminent arrival of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in Mexico and Yucatán, the mayor of Mérida, Renán Barrera Concha, reiterated that the Mérida Fest will be held next January.
The mayor assured that the program for this event is already being worked on, which will be held within the framework of the 479th anniversary of the founding of Mérida, arguing that citizens need to be distracted, regardless of whether crowds gather at the event.
Mayor Barrera Concha was interviewed after launching the December security operation in the historic center of the city.
In that vein, he said that it is the personal responsibility of citizens and not of the government, to protect themselves from possible coronavirus infections, in addition to insisting that it is time for citizens to have normal activity.
“We are reaching a point where responsibility is essential. Restrictions cannot avoid responsibility, ” he said.
“It is time for us to be active. We cannot always be isolated, ” he said.
Barrera Concha confirmed that the Mérida Fest will have massive events, similar to the one that occurred during the lighting of the Christmas tree at the Remate de Paseo de Montejo, in which there were many people and health measures were not properly respected.
It should be remembered that the appearance of the omicron variant keeps several countries in the world in check, including Mexico because it is still unknown what the effects it has on people.
