Mérida, Yucatán, (December 04, 2021).- México showed its hierarchy and raised the millennial game of the Pok Ta Pok or Maya Ball Game, during the IV World Cup of this sport.

The warriors of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Panama met on the court during the IV World Cup of this game that for centuries was a fundamental part of the cultural life of the region.

It was a competitive tournament, but I was surprised by the dedication that each of the players had, supporting the weight of the ball 3-kilo for 5 games yesterday was titanic.

José Manrique Esquivel | President Association of indigenous and traditional sports and games

Mexico faced Belize in the final game where with a score of 35-11, the neighboring country took the cup.

Although the players left their souls in each rebound, they fought like true warriors and at the end there was a champion.

Why do I consider myself a champion? Because well, I already took my first steps to hit the ball

Samuel Peña | Mexico player

Although the Maya Ball Game was relegated for many years, today the new generations are fighting to give it a new look.

  • This cup is made in order to preserve and reactivate the practice of this discipline, in the countries that make up the Mayan world.

The organizing committee announced that the first Pok Ta Pok Women’s World Cup will soon take place in 2023.
