The price of free-range turkey will range between 700 and 1,000 pesos when the holidays approach.

MÉRIDA, Yucatán, (December 15, 2021).- Hipólito Ramírez, president of the Benito Juárez Market Tenants Union, assured that before the arrival of the holiday season the price of free-range turkey ranges between 700 and 1,000 pesos.

He explained that the consumption of this poultry is limited to the Christmas and New Year’s dinner, which contributes to the increase in the price, the closer the holidays are the cost could increase, especially due to the high production costs of raising poultry.

He said that in addition there are fewer and fewer people who are dedicated to raising turkeys, and that causes their price to increase even more, especially at the end of the year, where demand is high.

He acknowledged that frozen meats are not sold in the market, only fresh, so there is no possibility for people to buy a frozen turkey, so it depends on the few local producers, but he acknowledged that there is no capacity to supply the demand of the turkey that is generated at this time.

It is already difficult to stock up on these animals that constitute one of the most common dishes on the festivities of December 24 and 31, and they have begun to sell each bird that ranges between 10 and 12 kilos at 700 pesos.

“It is in this season when these birds reach a higher cost, since it is one of the main ingredients for the Christmas or New Year’s dinner, even in the face of the increase in inputs for their diet, these animals could reach up to a thousand pesos. Although few people are dedicated to this activity year after year, they recalled that due to the pandemic, sales in 2020 were not as expected, since most families refrained from cooking Christmas dinner with this bird, since the economy was not so good ”.

However, for now, they await orders, because, although there are interested parties, the sales have not been closed yet, because, like all Mexicans, buyers wait until the very last minute to make their purchases.
