Progreso, Yucatan, (January 11, 2022).- In the Chicxulub community of the Port of Progreso, this Monday the first stone of what will be the Jurassic Trail was laid, a project that will tell the story of the meteorite that extinguished the dinosaurs and with which families will have a space of healthy coexistence.
The Jurassic Trail will be a park that will present the theme of the 200-kilometer-diameter crater and everything related to the meteorite that impacted Earth 66 million years ago.
The Jurassic Trail will include a section of the old coastal highway to Chicxulub Puerto and will continue in the Chicxulub port park.
What can we find on the Jurassic Trail?
According to information from the Progreso City Council, the Jurassic Trail will have more than 20 attractions among which are:
- Dinosaurs of different species
- Fossil remains
- Settings
- illumination
- Spaces for direct coexistence with nature
- Souvenir shop
- Restrooms
- Parking lot
This project was announced in 2019 and was scheduled to start in 2020; however, due to the pandemic, it has been paused and has been resumed until now.
This Monday, during the laying of the first stone, the mayor of Progreso, Julián Zacarías Curi stressed that with this plan the history of the crater will be strengthened throughout the municipality, especially in Chicxulub, and will boost the economy and knowledge among visitors to everyone.
Subsequently, Zacarías Curi gave the flag for the start of the works, and together with other public officials, he toured the area where this walk will be established.
Meteorite Museum in Progreso
It should be remembered that the Meteorite Museum is about to open in Progreso after most of the construction and decoration works have been completed and the museology process is now being prepared.
It is expected that the correction of the details of the construction will be completed shortly, which is in charge of the Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development (Sedatu) of the federal government.
Personnel in charge of monitoring the construction of the enclosure said that the work is already in its final details, while the head of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), Ali Dib indicated that the site already has a 95% progress.
