The president of AFAD indicated that the lack of registrations is due to the fact that people do not want to leave their homes for fear of contracting Covid.

Mérida, Yucatán.- The low-cost spay/neuter campaigns carried out by the Albergue Franciscano del Animal Desprotegido (AFAD) were suspended two weeks ago, informed its president, Lidia Saleh Angulo because people are afraid of catching Omicron and don’t want to leave their homes.

She regretted that people have stopped registering their pets to be sterilized since the income obtained through this activity is used to maintain the fixed expenses besides basic services including the salaries of workers such as veterinarians, assistants, receptionists, cleaning staff, among others.

She specified that in spite of the difficult panorama that is being experienced due to the increase in the number of cases of contagion in the entity, the shelter continues its operation since it has dogs and cats to take care of.

In addition, the adoptions of dogs and cats have decreased considerably, in spite of the fact that they showed a slight recovery until last year.

“Many people are infected and those who are not infected live locked up because they are afraid, they are taking care of themselves and the reality is that we have not had sterilization campaigns for weeks, we have no adoptions, we are going through another very difficult stage”, he assured.

She acknowledged that despite the fact that last year was more difficult, AFAD continued working.
