Is a fourth wave coming to the Yucatan, or is it already here?

The new variant of Covid-19 known as Omicron has caused the number of cases to increase rapidly in recent weeks. In Mexico alone, 254 cases of this type of coronavirus have been detected, which until now is the most contagious, placing it as the second country in Latin America with the most registered cases.

On the other hand, at the continental level, the United States leads the list with 24,742 cases from Ómicron, Canada in second place with 629, Chile with 325 cases, Mexico with 254, and Brazil with 189 are the top five.

Based on the most recent figures from the global platform for sequencing the virus Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), the following cases were registered in each state of the country (figures updated Dec. 31st, 2021):

  • Mexico City (CDMX) 159
  • State of Mexico (Edomex) 35 cases
  • Quintana Roo 18 cases
  • Yucatán 13 cases
  • Tabasco 12 cases
  • Puebla four cases
  • Tamaulipas five cases
  • Sinaloa two cases
  • Hidalgo one case
  • Veracruz one case
  • Oaxaca one case
  • Chiapas one case
  • Guerrero one case
  • Baja California one case

During the last week of the year, the number of cases registered skyrocketed to figures not seen for months: on Monday, December 27th, there were 943 positive cases registered; on Tuesday, Dec. 28rh, the figure jumped to 4,426; on Wednesday, Dec. 29th, 5,290; on Thursday, Dec. 30th, 8,024, and on Friday, Dec. 31st, the last day of the year, the number of cases went up to 10,037 confirmed cases.

  5. Argentina 93 cases
  6. French Guiana 49 cases

  10. Peru 12 cases
