An analysis of the impact on visitor arrivals will be carried out.

(Izamal, Yucatán – Turismo Izamal) – Given the increase in the number of infections of Omicron, tourism authorities of Izamal will analyze the possible scenarios and the impact on the arrival of visitors. Authorities do not rule out taking new measures to contain the advance of this strain, which is much more contagious than the previous ones and could have a more significant impact.

Carlos Alejandro Itzá Mex, in charge of the Tourism Department of the municipality, informed that in the last few days, the number of cases of Covid-19 had increased significantly, so it will be necessary to be attentive to any indication from the state and health authorities.

He reminded that there had been a good economic recovery in the tourism sector; however, “there is a possibility that this new wave may force us to take actions to safeguard the health of citizens and visitors,” he warned.

He clarified that the Convent of San Antonio de Padua and the KinichKakmó pyramid remain open to visitors but with certain restrictions. For example, in the convent, the correct use of mouthguards is necessary, while access to the museum is restricted hours and the number of people.

The municipal official said that Mayor Warnel May Escobar has already called an urgent meeting to determine the new measures to be taken regarding the progress that has had the omicron strain, so it is a matter of time for the public to be informed.

“On the other hand, we will be coordinating with all service providers to ensure that they are implementing the sanitary protocols since they must be followed to stop the advance of the contagions,” he considered.

Itzá Mex said that Izamal’s tourism sector had developed very well during the last couple of months since, during November, the hotel sector registered an occupancy rate of over 95 percent and the restaurant sector.

“It will not be a normal year for anyone because part of the pandemic continues. Now that the new strain has appeared, we can see how many countries have begun to suspend flights to Mexico, so the influx of tourists to Izamal could be affected,” he said at the end.

As we have reported, given the increase in the number of cases of infection by the omicron variant, several tourist sites and magical towns have reinforced their supervision so that visitors respect the sanitary protocols.

In Valladolid and Río Lagartos, the municipal authorities make rounds to ensure that tourists have their masks on and that the maximum permitted capacity is respected in the establishments without being crowded.
