Large amounts of sargassum landed out of season, in an atypical case in Cozumel.

(COZUMEL, QUINTANA ROO – ZOFEMAT).- As of this Sunday 16th, two crews in charge of the Federal Maritime and Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) are raising a large amount of sargassum in the Tourist Center of Cozumel that was brought by the cold front and the strong waves.

Despite the cold weather (“Heladez)” that has prevailed lately, derived from Cold Front Number 22, Zofemat personnel went to the Aquasafari pier, to collect the Marine algae that has accumulated all along Rafael E. Melgar Avenue.

According to information provided by Rafael Saavedra, Representative Director of Zofemat, it was revealed that they had 30 people available to take care of this problem, however, they will open vacancies for 50 more people in order to reinforce the working crews.

There is an item of around 400 thousand pesos for payroll and purchase of materials to collect the sargassum that landed on the Cozumel boardwalk. They are also relying on trucks to remove the seaweed.
