With intense gusts of wind and hail fall at dawn, the beaches of Celestún and Sisal were almost empty, as was the fishing activity, which has to stop due to the weather conditions

(YUCATAN – CONAGUA).- The entry of cold fronts into Yucatecan lands had already been announced, and on the morning of this January 16th it reached the ports of Celestún and Sisal, for which fishing activity remains in stand by, in addition to the fact that the number of visitors in the ports has decreased after the season at the beginning of the year.

Raymundo Canté, a well-known fisherman from the port of Sisal, commented: “We were already informed of the arrival of the Cold Fronts and many of us fishermen took preventive measures regarding the safety of our vessels and secured them in the port of shelter.”

“But I was surprised that in the early hours of the morning the roof of the mine in my house began to sound, at first I thought it was the drops of water, but the sound increased and when I checked I realized that what was falling was a good-sized hail, and the cold was felt more acutely,” he said.

In the early hours of the morning, the strong gusts of wind hit the palm trees and cardboard houses that are on the edge of the beach, in fact, some palms from the palapas fell to the ground or were dragged by the air.

So far there are no reports of accidents or problematic situations due to these winds, since the fishermen have been aware of the situation for days and avoided going out fishing or those who went out did not move away from the shore of the beach, to return as soon as possible.

In the port of Sisal, it can be seen that the number of visitors has decreased considerably to almost zero tourists. The locals comment that this may be a consequence of the cold weather and the undertow of the sargassum that completely covered the community beach.
