A hammerhead shark gave a particular show in front of a boat that was sailing in the waters of Cozumel; he chased a stingray and finally ate it.
A 43-second video shows the moment of the race undertaken by the prey and its predator, before the astonished gaze of a group of people.
“On April 15, 2022, Ana Arana Martin, Andres Maillard, and Meybol Nataly witnessed an impressive event which was recorded with a cell phone,” shared Charlie Castro, author of the video.
“We were on a boat sailing the area known as Cielito quite far from the shore when we saw a Hammerhead Shark that was chasing a stingray! They passed right under our boat and we were all impressed, ” Charlie wrote as an explanation to the clip.
In the recording you can hear how one of the young women asks if there is anything that can be done to help the hunted animal; the response of her companions was no, that it was a natural process.
In a telephone interview with Novedades Quintana Roo, the author of the video explained that this scene is not common.
“Four people were on the boat, as a diver I can tell you that hammerhead sharks are mostly in deep water (80 feet deep at least). The captain of the boat, with 30 years of experience, had never seen such a thing” Castro said.
He explained that one of his friends was recording the horizon and the color of the sea when the whole group noticed that something jumped.
At first, they thought that it was a dolphin, however, shortly after they noticed that the tail and fin corresponded to a shark. When the pair of animals approached the boat, they discovered that they were witnessing something unique.
“The shark tore the tail off the ray and then ended up eating it, I didn’t record that anymore because there was a lot of blood,” he said.
As he shared in his post, he pointed out that in addition to the chase, another impressive scene was seeing how the shark dealt with its physiognomy to eat its prey, due to the shape of its head.
The place where this impressive sequence was captured was in the area known as “El Cielito”, not far from the spot known as “El Cielo”, popular for the large number of starfish that can be admired, in Cozumel.
On the coast of Isla de las Golondrinas it is common to see rays, but not hammerhead sharks. Charlie Castro believes that the shark chased the ray from deep waters until it was tired and managed to hunt it in this shallow water area.
