The first femicide of 2023 in Yucatán —according to state media— was registered after finding the lifeless body of the young Yeimy Berenice Lavadores Canul in a well located in San José Tecoh, south of Mérida, on January 7. According to information from local authorities, the woman was 25 years old and was reported missing on January 4.
The young woman’s family had denounced her absence after she was last seen at her home located in Salvador Alvarado Sur in the state capital. According to the facts, Yeimy Berenice would have gone to Plaza Kukulcán , which was near her house. However, no news was heard from her after several hours after her.
The woman’s close relatives indicated that she usually made her journeys by motorcycle, but recently it had broken down, which would have been the reason she had used public transport that day.
After not knowing anything about her whereabouts, the young woman’s family went to the Yucatan State Attorney General’s Office (FG) to report her disappearance. Dependency that activated the Alba Protocol to search for her. However, three days after her case was reported, her lifeless body was found at an address in San José Tecoh on 127th street with 58.

The body was sent to the Forensic Medical Service of the State Attorney General’s Office ( FGE ) and to the State Investigation Police ( PEI ) to carry out the corresponding studies, which indicated that the cause of death of the 25-year-old girl was mechanical asphyxia . caused by strangulation.
Given the reports released, the FGE authorities and the Secretary of Public Security initiated an investigation folder (G5/006/2023,) to follow up on the femicide case of Yeimy Berenice. The investigations of this case will also integrate the work of the staff of the Women’s Secretariat (Semujeres) and the State Executive Commission for Attention to Victims ( CEEAV ).
The first efforts of the state authorities after the confirmation of the femicide was to carry out a neighborhood operation where house-to-house interviews were carried out to obtain more information about the facts. The security tapes of the nearby perimeters have also been requested.
