Mexico’s Chamber of Representatives approved an amendment to the Federal Criminal Code and the Federal Victims’ Law to increase the penalties for injuries inflicted with acid.
The ruling was approved unanimously by 453 votes in favor.
The amendment states that a prison term of seven to fifteen years and a fine of three hundred to seven hundred days of salary will be imposed to whoever by himself or through an intermediary causes injury or lesions to another person, using any type of acid, alkali, corrosive, caustic, irritant, toxic or flammable agent or substance for such purpose.
“When the injury or injuries affect the face, neck, arm, hand or sexual organs of the victim, the penalty will be increased by up to one third, in its minimum and maximum”, that is, in those cases, the penalties will reach 20 years.
When the victim is a woman, disabled person or minor, the penalty will be increased up to 22.5 years.
If the injury or injuries affect vital organs or functions, endanger life or affect more than half of the body, the crime may be classified as homicide or attempted femicide, which reaches up to 40 years in prison.
