As part of the strategies and public policies to prevent obesity-related diseases, the Mayor of Merida, Renan Barrera Concha, maintains programs focused on nutrition care, anthropometric measurements, and preventive tests for capillary glucose and blood pressure control in the medical health modules.

During the presentation of the activities to commemorate the World Day Against Obesity, which took place on March 4th, the Municipal President announced that on March 27th there will be an intensive program called “NutriZumba” to promote health care.

To achieve this, he pointed out that in the medical modules of the Health and Social Welfare Directorate, there are free programs dedicated to medical check-ups, which allow the inhabitants to have a follow-up of their sugar levels, blood pressure, weight control, height and waist circumference, as well as to consult on nutritional diets that will allow them to improve their health.

“Next March 27, the Nutrition Department, through the Nutrition Consultation in Modules program, will carry out yoga classes, physical activation, anthropometry measurements (weight, height, and waist circumference), capillary glucose tests, blood pressure, and food orientation activities in Santa Rosa Park,” he said.

Barrera Concha emphasized that one of the most important public policies in Mérida, although it is not a direct attribution of the municipal authority, is to assist the state health programs to generate awareness among the population about the importance of having timely medical exams to avoid chronic diseases.

For his part, the director of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Ildefonso Machado Dominguez, said that for this event they worked in coordination with Dr. Jose Rafael Castillo Aguilar, deputy director of Health and Social Welfare, Zamia Najiba Amyuni Angeles, coordinator of the Bachelor of Nutrition at the Mesoamerican University of San Agustin and Edsi Gomez Perez, head of the Department of Nutrition, to create a program of activities to create a culture of self-care.

“Currently, nutritional consultations are provided in six of the Health Modules, as part of the multidisciplinary services (medicine, nursing, psychology, dentistry, and rehabilitation) provided in the modules, as well as lectures and workshops on various nutrition topics,” stressed Gómez Pérez.

Every March 4, he added, World Obesity Day is commemorated, a date on which the World Health Organization promotes practical solutions to help people to reach and maintain a healthy weight and to carry out an adequate treatment.

Finally, the health modules are available in the neighborhoods and communities for those interested. In the community of Caucel, it is located on Calle 22 between 21 and 23; in the Melitón Salazar neighborhood, on Calle 103, s/n, between 64 and 64 J; San Antonio Xluch, on Calle 137, number 625 between 72 and 74; Santa Rosa, on Calle 46, s/n between 95 and 97; and in Vergel, on Calle 15B, number 236 between 10 B and 10.
