The obligation to protect the properties that are the heritage of the Yucatecans will be maintained, and for this reason options are being sought to protect, among others, the Monumento a la Patria, in order to prevent them from being damaged by the paint that is usually painted by the demonstrators.
Although it could not be confirmed, yesterday it was reported that as part of the measures to protect the Monumento a la Patria they are considering the installation of elevated metal fences, like those used in Mexico City to protect the National Palace.
This measure would avoid a direct confrontation between the police forces that will be guarding the buildings and the demonstrators.
The State Government indicated yesterday that as in all citizen expressions, on Wednesday 8th, the freedom of expression of the demonstrators will be respected, in a framework of peaceful expression of concerns.
The authority recalls that the Monument to the Homeland is catalogued as historic by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), which means that its restoration in case of possible damages requires specialists and long and costly processes, that is why its protection is vital to avoid damages.
Regarding the installation of wooden structures around the monuments to Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Justo Sierra, due to the restoration works, the City Hall indicated that it understands that there will be expressions of concern on Wednesday 8th, but stressed that these structures were placed recently because the INAH has already authorized the intervention to clean them from last year’s graffiti.
Complaint for damage to monuments
It was also indicated that the investigation files that were integrated a year ago when the Municipality denounced the damages caused during the march of March 8, 2022, are in charge of the State Prosecutor’s Office.
When consulted about the case, the Municipality did not confirm whether it withdrew the complaint.
