During the last weekend of Easter holidays, a tourist from Veracruz was injured and received 33 stitches after being hit by a boat propeller while swimming in Celestún.
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon when the boat “Ixtún Celestún IV”, operated by Sergio “N”, 37, passed near Willbert A. and sliced his feet when he was quite far from the shore.
The tourist was swimming alone, but managed to be rescued and taken to the beach, and then to the Health Center, where 12 stitches were sewn on the sole of his right foot and 21 more on his left leg.
The owner of the boat, L.M.C.S., offered help to the injured man, who was taken aboard a transfer unit to a private clinic in Merida.
One of the relatives of the owner of the implicated boat said that the swimmer had already been warned that swimming in those limits could be dangerous, as it is the passage of boats to reach the fishing refuge.
Fish hook
In another case that did not result in serious injury, also in Celestún, a 10-year-old girl from a community in Maxcanú injured her right calf when a fishing hook was thrown and got caught in her skin while on the fishermen’s pier.
The girl was treated at the Health Center to have the steel hook removed.
