For people interested in bird conservation and trova, Proyecto Santa María will offer a concert by Alejandro Filio. The event will take place on May 12 at a site to be confirmed, as the previously scheduled date had to be postponed due to force majeure.

This initiative is part of the second part of the project To the rescue of the Yucatecan parrot, with which they seek to build a training and pre-release cage for the birds they have in rehabilitation.

Such cage will be established in the jungle of Tzucmuc, municipality of Chankom (Yucatan), where the T’uut Sanctuary (Parrot Sanctuary) will be located.

“This project is supported by our own resources and those of some benefactors. The fundraising activities help us to obtain resources to be able to grow”, assure the members of the project.

According to José Medina, president of Proyecto Santa María, in an interview with La Jornada Maya, the cage will be used so that the birds under his care can learn to fly, learn the habits of their species and become stronger.

The concert, named Alejandro: Guitar and Voice, will benefit the Project, whose mission, he recalled, is to protect the birds of Yucatán, especially the parrots that are victims of illegal trafficking.

An integration and pre-release cage for the birds undergoing rehabilitation, to be installed in a police station in the municipality of Chankom, is part of “the second phase of the project. In the management unit we have birds in rehabilitation, which for the last three years have been included in a program for reincorporation into the wild,” he said.

For Proyecto Santa María, said José Medina, this cage would represent the opportunity to work with them in a final phase in search of their reincorporation into the wild.

The cage would be 30 meters long by 10 meters wide: “It is a large cage, but it also depends on the conditions of the terrain“.

There are 22 species of parrots in Mexico and four are found in Yucatán. Illegal trade and the depredation of their habitat are factors that reduce their population, so Proyecto Santa María seeks to help in their conservation and protection through the program Al rescate del loro yucateco (To the rescue of the Yucatecan parrot).
