With 64 votes in favor, one against, and one abstention, the senators also approved ending the Insabi, whose functions will now pass to the IMSS-Bienestar
The project states that the health services of the IMSS-Benestar will now be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Health with regard to the free provision of health services, medicines, and other associated supplies required by people without social security.
In addition, in the Health System for Well-being, the collection of recovery fees for the provision of health services, medicines and other supplies associated with people without social security is prohibited.
The reforms come amid the growing role of the Armed Forces in Mexico, where López Obrador has assigned them to public security, infrastructure, works management, and state-owned companies.
On Friday night, the Senate also approved a reform so that the Army is in charge of a new airline, which López Obrador has announced will be called Mexicana, in honor of the one that went bankrupt in 2010.
These reforms were approved in the absence of the opposition bloc, which on Thursday halted the last session of the ordinary period between jerks, outbursts, slaps, and blows, given the lack of agreements between the pro-government and opposition blocs in Congress and kept the rostrum taken for more than 24 hours, which led the official legislators to change their venue to continue with the session.
The opposition has accused Morena, López Obrador’s party, of promoting reforms at dawn and on “fast track”, a legislative process in which the majority speeds up voting without consensus with the other political forces.
