With the start of agricultural burning in the vicinity of the municipality of Mérida, the risk of a resurgence of forest fires that occur during this season increases.

In response to this, the head of the Yucatan State Civil Protection Coordination (Procivy), Enrique Alcocer Basto, called on agricultural producers to take extreme precautions when carrying out this activity, in order to prevent burning from getting out of control and potentially generating a large-scale fire.

“Among the exhortations made is precisely to agricultural producers, to take all necessary measures, to notify the municipality, to make firebreaks around the area to be burned,” he pointed out.

“It is also important to strategically place water and organize with other people who may be other producers to take care of this burning and prevent it from getting out of control. It should be done early in the morning to finish before noon,” he referred.

It was reported that the agricultural burning season began last March, although it was carried out in stages, so since April 20th, the municipality of Mérida has been responsible for these field activities.

Agricultural burning concludes in May, although fires may continue for longer.
