The Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association proposed to Brazilian tour operators the implementation of connection packages through the United States to facilitate the visa process for visitors from that country, which has plummeted due to measures implemented by the Mexican government.
The hotel sector met with Brazilian tour operators to seek strategies to help recover the market that is now traveling to the Dominican Republic.
Jesus Almaguer Salazar, president of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, mentioned that they will also work with the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council to define a promotion plan.
The issue was discussed within the framework of the WTM tourism fair held in Sao Paulo from April 3 to 5, which is held annually.
However, this year, given the situation at hand, they are looking for ways to not lose the market that, before the visa, meant almost 155,000 travelers annually for the Mexican Caribbean.
“We are giving away the tourism that is going to another country, since travelers are interested in getting to know Quintana Roo, but they cannot risk being denied entry,” added Almaguer Salazar.
The president of the hoteliers mentioned that the CPTQ participated in the meetings and they will see how they can generate promotion campaigns to recover some of the lost visitors.
The expectation is that the market can be recovered at some point, although it depends on the will of the Presidency of the Republic, since doors have been knocked on different federal instances, but without achieving any progress.
In 2021, a year before the implementation of visas for Brazilian tourists, the Mexican Caribbean received 155,096 visitors, one year later in 2022, the figure was only 141,114 people, a difference of 13,952.
