The store known as “Palacio de Hierro” located on 44th street between 39th and 41st, one block away from the city’s historic center, caught fire minutes after it had been closed by its employees.
There are reports of a total loss of the materials stored in the store. This caused a significant mobilization of security authorities, who arrived at the scene. First, municipal police officers, and then agents of the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), to take note of the events.
Meanwhile, uniformed officers, friends, acquaintances, and civilians who joined to support and try to extinguish the flames with buckets of water, while waiting for the firefighters to arrive.
The commercial establishment dedicated to the sale of threads for making hammocks, fabrics, tablecloths, and rocking chairs, among other items, located one block away from the historic center of the city, was engulfed by flames despite efforts to extinguish them. Minutes later, firefighters arrived at the scene and carried out a titanic task until they managed to extinguish the huge flames that were raging inside the store and consumed everything in their path.
During the entire time the fire lasted, employees and owners of neighboring businesses feared that the flames could reach their establishments. Several municipal police officers used several extinguishers before the arrival of the firefighters, however, it was all in vain as the flames grew larger.
It is not known for certain if the store has any type of insurance to try to recover, as allegedly, the fire was caused by a short circuit, which caused everything inside the store to turn to ashes.
After extinguishing the flames, elements of the Mexican Army guarded the area and the business, while a recount of the damages caused was carried out.
