Teotihuacán, State of Mexico. Due to the severity of her injuries, a 13-year-old girl who was a victim of a hot air balloon fire and crash in the municipality of San Martin de las Piramides, in the State of Mexico, was transferred by helicopter to the “Children’s Hospital” in the city of Toluca.

After the accident, the girl had been hospitalized in a hospital in the town of Axapusco, but due to second and third-degree burns, she had to be transferred to the capital of the State of Mexico.

On the morning of Saturday, April 1, a man and a woman died after a hot air balloon crashed in the vicinity of the Teotihuacán Archaeological Zone. The moment of the accident was captured on video by a tourist, showing how the balloon’s basket, where the crew travels, caught fire in mid-flight.

According to local sources, the operator of the balloon lost control of the device due to mishandling of the gas tanks. The flames caused the tourists to jump from the balloon, which fell in the Oxtoyohualco ejido, in the San Lorenzo Tlalmimilolpan neighborhood.

The government of the State of Mexico reported that the fatalities were a 39-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man from Mexico City.

One of the attractions of this tourist municipality in the State of Mexico is hot air balloon flights offered by several companies. There is even an annual festival where dozens of giant balloons rise together and fly over the archaeological zone.

However, in recent years, at least five accidents have occurred, leaving people injured and causing material damage. The most recent occurred on Monday, January 2, affecting a dozen people traveling aboard the aircraft over the archaeological zone.

In recent months, business owners have reported clandestine companies offering hot air balloon flights in Teotihuacán, which do not have the necessary permits and training to provide the service.

For this reason, the mayor reported that they are working with the competent authorities to clarify the facts and hold irregular and clandestine companies that provide this service accountable.
