The First District Court in Yucatán granted two suspensions to the unloading of ballast, as well as the widening of an access road in Puerto, within the amparo lawsuit filed by a group of environmentalists who consider that the reef and mangrove are being affected.
According to a press release from the environmentalists, with respect to amparo 487/2023, the authorities have not accredited the existence of an environmental impact authorization for the activities in the protected natural area, so one of the suspensions is to stop the navigation and anchoring of the vessel in the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park.
“In his agreement (the judge) indicates that the effects of the suspension are to paralyze the navigation and anchoring of the vessel called Melody on the coral reef community located in the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve (MBCR),” said the organizations.
According to the provisional suspension obtained by organizations such as Voces Unidas de Puerto Morelos, Puerto Morelos Sustentable, Grupo Ecologista del Mayab, and the Asociación para el Desarrollo Ecosocial de Mujeres, the vessel Melody from Cuba with material to unload and transfer to the Cenotes Route, cannot perform maneuvers.
On March 25, a group of citizens and environmentalists peacefully demonstrated in the municipality to make known the situation and the effects of the transfer of the material arriving at the fiscal dock operated by the Quintana Roo Port Authority (Apiqroo), but they also filed the amparo lawsuit.
“To the State Government we have not been notified of the injunction and the works for the unloading continue, since half of the material that was transferred is being taken,” he added, although during yesterday afternoon no maneuvers could be seen at the port.
Regarding the road to be widened, he explained that they are in the studies stage, which will take more than a month, so these will determine the feasibility and have a definitive project.
A provisional suspension was also granted so that no logging, clearing and mangrove filling work is carried out and “no construction of a road is carried out on one side of José María Morelos Avenue, which connects federal highway 307 with the coastal zone of the municipality of Puerto Morelos, for the transportation and operation of the trucks that will be transporting the stone material”, according to the organizations.
