MÉRIDA, Yucatan – Congressman Gaspar Quintal Parra assured that the importance of recognizing the Mayan language as a language would mean paying a “historical debt” to this ethnic group.
He points out that he also wants it to be used in health services:
The PRI legislator in the State Congress the importance of this reform that establishes that the Mayan language will also be the official language in Yucatan, health services will also be offered in that language, in addition to the fact that Mayan speakers will be able to access the media.
Quintal Parra, promoter of this initiative, emphasized that in this way the Mayan people will be able to obtain services and public information before the governments, as well as to make effective their human rights as native peoples.
It also clarifies the importance of preserving Mayan medicine:
In addition, the State will support in the preservation, protection and contemporary evolution of Mayan medicine, and in the sustainable management of the environment and its usable natural resources, traditional techniques, its use and endogenous development.
Finally, he mentions the importance of taking care of the native language:
Regarding the mass media, Gaspar Quintal pointed out that public policies will be established so that Mayan-speaking people can be part of these and, in this way, they will be able to generate content and information that protect and promote their native language.
“With this proposal, the linguistic rights of the Mayan people in Yucatan will be guaranteed, and therefore, the Public Powers, the Autonomous Constitutional Bodies and the City Councils will be obliged to offer services, procedures and information in their own language, which is the basis of their identity and culture,” he concluded.
