Cancun, Quintana Roo.- The works to electrify the Maya Train  will double the electricity supply capacity throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, with more than 53 electricity infrastructure works between Merida (Yucatan) and Chetumal (Quintana Roo).

This was announced at President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s morning conference by the head of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), Manuel Bartlett Díaz, who said that a total of 53 high-voltage works, electrical substations and transmission lines will be built to provide traction power to the Tren Maya, which will be electric for more than 700 kilometers.

All the works must be ready by November 2023, of which 19 are between Merida and Cancun, while the remaining 34 works are between Cancun and Chetumal.

In addition, there are 556 kilometers of medium voltage lines for 170 services, 117 booths, 34 stations, 6 workshops, 8 maintenance bases and three facilities of the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA).

All of this will allow the Yucatan peninsula to increase its installed electrical capacity from 2,642 to 4,042 megawatts, coming from the two combined cycle plants currently under construction in Yucatan.

The head of the Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (FONATUR), Javier May, announced that four duques de alba in Puerto Progreso, Yucatan, corresponding to section 3, where the electrified double track of the train begins, have already been completed and are in operation, in which four large electric generation works are 80 percent advanced.

The four dukes of dawn at the Beacon Dock in Puerto Progreso increase the capacity of the dock and speed up the arrival and disembarkation of ballast and other inputs for the work of the Tren Maya, highlighted May Rodriguez.

“One of the main characteristics of Section 3 is that this is where the electrified double track begins, which is 700 kilometers from Merida to Chetumal, and this will allow the use of clean energy for the operation of the train and provide energy security to the Yucatan Peninsula,” he added.
