In Southeast Mexico, there is a great variety of agricultural products that meet the requirements to be part of a catalog of the great demand for the agri-food export industry, such as achiote, which due to its quality increases its presence in national and international markets, through local companies.
Ali Charruf Álvarez, president of the National Agricultural Council (CNA) of Yucatán, pointed out that the achiote harvested in the south-southeast of the country will soon be processed and sold in various stores in the country and abroad through a Yucatecan food brand.
He explained that this product has in the southeast of the country, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo, more than 26 million plants in development, which this year will be bearing fruit.
“For its large production, the local achiote producers can meet the supply of the local agro-industry in its entirety,” he noted.
Big consolidated companies are the ones that can acquire this production, which is around 90 tons of achiote per year.
He explained that this product can be processed in different presentations and sent to other states or countries, where it is highly demanded by different branches of the industry.
Charruf Álvarez pointed out that achiote is also used in the medicine, cosmetics and textile sectors, and although it is a plant native to the Americas, it has become a basic ingredient for many dishes in the southeast of Mexico, even since pre-Hispanic times.
The business leader noted that the latest official record on that plant, which grows and is produced in the warm zones of Mexico, especially in Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatán, indicates that in 2017 the area planted was 532 hectares, of which 476 were harvested and 570.04 tons of achiote seed were obtained
Therefore, he stated that by acquiring achiote produced in Mexico by local companies, the economy of the communities is boosted, the circulation in the region is guaranteed, and added value is given to this product.
