New museum and other works for the Chichén Itzá area
There is no doubt that with the construction activities of the Maya Train and its upcoming inauguration, there has been an increase in infrastructure works and care in the region of the Maya civilization of the magical Yucatan Peninsula and the Mexican southeast.
This new site museum will be dedicated to the early years of the Maya people and their origins. It will showcase the most recent archaeological findings, many of them discovered during excavations during the construction of the train route.
Likewise, a new section was announced in the area for visitors, which the authorities are already in charge of setting up and will be known as “Old Chichen” or “Initial Series”. In it there are two platforms, the Ball Game court and the Houses of the Moon and of the Snails.
New findings and 800 pieces never before exhibited.
Chichén Itzá means “Mouth of the well of the water sorcerers” and was a sacred city that had its heyday between 900 and 1200 AD. The new museum is also planned to carry out the conservation of the different structures in the area.
So it is said that the permanent exhibition of the new precinct will have 800 pieces that had not been exhibited before.
In the INAH report of last February, related to the works of the train, it is said that more than 4,000 pieces of real estate have been preserved among foundations, plazas and other structures, as well as 570 pieces of pottery and figurines and 16 burials of the pre-Hispanic era were located.
It is also expected that the museum will show most of these new discoveries, which will surely surprise experts, tourists, curious and amateurs of the Mayan culture.
Visitor attention centers for the different archaeological sites
In addition, the opening of a Visitor Assistance Center (also known as Catvi) was announced for the archaeological site of Ek’Balam, which is near the municipality of Valladolid, in Yucatan.
These spaces of attention are built for the different archaeological zones that are in the route of the Maya Train like Chichén Itzá, Uxmal or Palenque, since a great affluence in tourism is expected and with them it is wanted to optimize the experience of the many visitors.
The recent works of conservation, the new museum and the centers of attention have been given thanks to the Program for the Improvement of Archaeological Zones (PROMEZA), and are a priority for the Government of Mexico, which carries them out through the Ministry of Culture and the INAH.
All of them are non-invasive with the environment and are expected to help the culture of what was the great Maya Empire of antiquity to flourish.
