On the eve of the commemoration of municipal employees, celebrated every April 24th, Mayor Renán Barrera Concha recognized the effort, commitment, and trajectory of those who with dedication and love keep Mérida as one of the best cities in the country.
During the ceremony held at the Olimpo Cultural Center, the Mayor stated that the public service that all workers provide to the city allows its inhabitants to be proud of living in a well-ordered, optimal Mérida with a great quality of life.
“You should be very proud of the service you have provided to the city in the best years of your professional life, because to perform your work, you need to have a great heart and always think of the common good,” he said.
In his speech, Barrera Concha reviewed the three administrations he has led, reaffirming his gratitude to municipal workers for contributing their experience, willingness, and hope to build a Mérida with more opportunities for growth, security, and quality public services.
“Without you, I could not do my job or face the challenges involved in leading the City Hall. You are a great team, and that’s why today we recognize your commitment to Mérida,” he expressed.
With nostalgia perched on the podium, Barrera Concha shared the moments of joy and challenges he has faced with municipal employees in various departments, especially the path he has traveled with those who have already completed 28 and 30 years of service.
Accompanied by all the directors of the City Hall, the Mayor congratulated and presented awards to the employees who will retire with the joy of having served the city and its citizens in 2023.
“I have learned a lot from you, especially to work for the present and a better future for Mérida. This will always be your home. Thank you very much for your tireless work,” he said.
On behalf of the 99 retiring employees, Marisol Puerto Acevedo, belonging to the Secretariat of Citizen Participation, thanked the Mayor for his support in carrying out their daily work, as well as all the bosses and colleagues who enriched their lives with teachings and friendship throughout their working careers.
“Looking back, it seems like a dream how technologically this City Hall has changed. For those of us who started working in the 90s, we had to do it with typewriters, then with computers that used floppy disks, and today, we already have cutting-edge technology and internet equipment that make the job easier,” she commented.
At the end of the ceremony, attendees bid farewell to their colleagues with applause, hugs, and congratulations, while videos with testimonies and experiences that made many of them iconic figures of the municipal government were projected on screens, earning them admiration, respect, and friendship from their bosses and colleagues.
The Mayor also mentioned that the workforce of the Mérida City Hall is made up of 5,354 people, of whom 1,802 are women and 3,552 are men.
He recalled that, in recognition and support of the work of municipal employees, during the current administration, working conditions were improved with actions such as the delivery of school scholarships to 1,025 daughters and sons of unionized City Hall workers with a total amount of 615,000 pesos; a 10% increase in transportation assistance for 1,248 beneficiaries; salary harmonization; the delivery of 469,655.54 pesos corresponding to economic aid to beneficiaries designated by the death of 21 active workers; and a 5% increase in food vouchers, among others.
