Students who placed the state high in the First Lego League Challenge 2023 competition visited the Dzilam de Bravo wind farm and the Metropolitan Technological University (UTM) in a tour organized by the Ministry of Economic Development and Labor (Sefoet), in order to show them Yucatán’s panorama in terms of energy generation and innovation.

There are 13 students from the “Juana de Asbaje” Telesecundaria school, located in the Ekpedz district in the municipality of Tixcacalcupul, who won first place in the regional “Innovation Project” category and with which, along with 22 other students based in Merida, they won their pass to the national phase, which was held last March in Mexico City.

At the school’s facilities, the young people presented their project on water and electricity generation with wind energy and described their experience from the planning stage to their participation in the different stages of the competition.

“Study and constant effort give results. The people who are innovating, thinking and developing, as is the case with you, are the generations that will be sustaining our state,” said the head of Sefoet, Ernesto Herrera Novelo, recognizing the performance of the members of the U Muuk’iik’ (wind power, in Mayan) team.

Accompanied by the Undersecretary of Energy, Juan Carlos Vega Milke, he added that “Governor Mauricio Vila’s mandate is to address the need for employment in the interior of the state, that we reach the 106 municipalities and work as a team to generate opportunities“.

In this sense, he told them that companies from different sectors are already operating in Yucatán, demanding not only qualified personnel in technical and knowledge aspects but also those who stand out for qualities such as teamwork and mastery of technology.

In the presence of the Ekpedz commissioner, José Pascual Cocom Dzib, and the president of the School Participation Council, Flora Tun Dzib, the young people, who also won the “Revelation Team” award in the national phase, said they were very proud to represent their community and demonstrate what they are capable of achieving.

The school’s principal, Mario Palomo Paredes, highlighted the commitment shown by the students and their teachers, as well as the support of their parents, who all invested a lot of time and effort to make their participation possible.

Later, at the Dzilam Bravo Wind Farm, they had the opportunity to learn more about the operation of wind turbines and the advantages they represent in the face of climate change. During the presentation given by personnel from the Park, they were also able to resolve their doubts about technical and operational aspects.
