A real tragedy occurred on Friday, May 26th, on the ring road of Mérida when a cyclist was hit by a driver.
The incident took place at kilometer one of the southern ring road of Mérida when a man attempted to cross the road near Boxito South. However, he did not realize that a Honda vehicle had the right of way.
The cyclist tried to cross the outer lane of the road to reach the Bicentenario housing development when the driver of the Honda failed to brake and collided with him.
Due to the strong impact, the man on the bicycle was thrown off and fell about 25 meters from the point of impact, sustaining serious injuries, including the loss of one of his arms.
Witnesses who saw the incident called for emergency services, and paramedics and police officers from the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) arrived at the scene. They found that the man no longer had vital signs; however, after resuscitation maneuvers, they managed to save his life and transported him to a hospital in Mérida.
Unfortunately, the man lost his arm, as the limb remained at the accident site, guarded by SSP officers who cordoned off the area and covered the remains until the relevant authorities arrived.
It should be noted that the driver of the vehicle was detained pending the investigation of responsibilities. It is presumed that the accident was due to the cyclist’s recklessness since the vehicle had an impact on the left side at the driver’s door, triggering the airbags.
While this type of accident is common on the ring road of Mérida, some pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists use sidewalks on the roadside to cross the road without taking the necessary precautions to prevent such accidents, which often have fatal outcomes.
