Heatwave in Yucatán causes two elderly people to faint in Progreso

A pair of elderly individuals succumbed to the heat, experiencing fainting spells between early morning and noon on Thursday, May 11th, resulting in their transfer to the hospital by the Red Cross delegation in Progreso.

One of them turned out to be a 90-year-old resident of Progreso named Andrés Poot M., who was walking on foot along 80th Street and 27th Street in the heart of downtown Progreso when he suddenly began to feel weak, requiring assistance from passersby and personnel from a nearby pharmacy.

The 90-year-old grandfather, realizing that he lacked the strength to stand, requested a chair in the shade to rest while witnesses sought the presence of officers from the Directorate of Public Safety and Traffic, who promptly arrived at the scene.

Given the man’s condition, it was necessary to call the local Red Cross delegation, whose base was just a few streets away from the scene of the incident. However, traffic caused a slight delay in the arrival of the two ambulance units with paramedics on board.

Once at the scene, the unfortunate nonagenarian specified that he had a heart condition, leading to the determination that he had suffered from hypotension and hyperglycemia at that moment. As a result, it was recommended that the affected individual urgently go to a hospital of his choice for a quick stabilization of his body.

Since the man agreed, he was directed by the paramedics to the ambulance on a stretcher. The incident even caught the attention of tourists from the “Carnival Valor” cruise ship, which arrived on Thursday morning.

Upon noticing the affected man, some individuals, through limited Spanish, asked if additional help was needed. However, this was not necessary as the DSPT officers contacted the elderly person’s family members.
