In early May, it was announced that the first unit of the IE-TRAM, Mérida’s new electric transportation, departed from a ship in Vigo, Spain.
The units, built in Europe, measure 12 meters in length and have a capacity of 105 passengers. They will become the first 100% electric service in the Southeast and the only one of its kind in all of Latin America.
On his Twitter account, the governor of Yucatán, Mauricio Vila, shared the exclusive production line for the state located in Zaragoza, Spain, where the new IE-TRAM units are being manufactured.
These units will form part of the new route of the ‘Va y Ven’ Transportation System, which recently added three new routes in Las Américas, in addition to the existing routes at the Airport, the night routes, Periférico, and Metropolitano.
These new buses feature four sliding doors, wheelchair access and space, passenger seats, USB chargers, Wi-Fi, GPS tracking, braille buttons, and other amenities for passengers.
They also have air conditioning specifically designed for zero-carbon emission units and advanced safety control that regulates their speed.
It is worth noting that IE-TRAM operations in Mérida will begin at the end of 2023, as they will be integrated with works that will be implemented alongside the Tren Maya and the Gran Parque La Plancha.
As announced, this new electric transportation that will arrive in Yucatán will connect Kanasín and Umán with Mérida and over 137 neighborhoods.
