The Manuel Berzunza Mérida Periférico has been one of the tragic scenes in Yucatán, where 11 people have died so far in 2023. However, this is just a small part of the overall toll in the state, which stands at 131 deaths from traffic accidents.
According to the representative of the National Center for Accident Prevention in Yucatán, René Flores Ayora, the majority of these tragic incidents could have been avoided. The individuals involved had consumed alcohol, were speeding, or in the case of motorcyclists, were not wearing the necessary safety gear.
This Tuesday, personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) descended to kilometer 20 of the periférico, as the driver of a vehicle lost their life after speeding and colliding with a tractor-trailer, which sent them into a ravine.
Police units and paramedics arrived at the scene, and the paramedics confirmed that the driver showed no signs of life. Rescue elements from the SSP fire department had to use the “jaws of life” to extract the body, which was trapped inside the vehicle.
Number of deaths:
