MÉRIDA, Yucatan – A few months into the grouper season, the Secretariat of Fishing and Sustainable Aquaculture of Yucatan ( SEPASY) reported that the fishery is doing well, with catches within the estimated average.
He also recalled that last year, the volume caught was close to 6,000 tons at the close of January 31.
Therefore, they expect fishermen to do well in the next lobster and octopus seasons, which start on July 1 and August 1, respectively.
Lobster
Rafael Combaluzier Medina, head of Sepasy, recalled that, in terms of lobster catch, last year about 700 tons were obtained; while of octopus, there were 19 thousand tons, figures within normal ranges.
“We have been observing that there is an octopus for this season, for lobster we do not have the information yet, the divers and fishermen themselves tell us that there are octopus sightings and we are waiting for the National Fishing Institute (Inapesca) to make the inspections before the season on the biomass, but we expect a good season,” he said.
Regarding the price registered for the grouper, he said that it has reached a ceiling, so he made a call to be aware of its value, because if it continues to rise, there will come a time when it will no longer be available.
