The Acanceh Maya Astronomical Observatory is one of the oldest in the Maya area and one of the recent discoveries by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in the locality. However, the lack of promotion and interest on the part of the municipality has caused the place to go unnoticed by national and international tourists.
Recent discoveries have revealed that the Cerrito de los Venados, as it is also known for being located in that subdivision, is not only one of the few solar observatories in the Maya area in the northern part of the Peninsula but also served for the observation of Venus, the third brightest celestial body.
The current municipal government led by Mario Cruz Herrera has shown little interest in promoting tourism in the municipality, to the extent of removing the emblematic letters of the locality’s name that were located in the square, without informing about their whereabouts.
According to residents of the Venados subdivision, there are very few instances when visitors come to this site because of the lack of promotion from tourism agencies and even from the municipality itself, making this place little-known.
