In an unusual event, a pair of deer, only a few months old, were found by a woman who was conducting a night tour near the ghost town of Misné Balam, just in front of the police station in San Ignacio.

During Friday afternoon, the municipal ecological police received a distress call from this citizen, as one of the “white-tailed” specimens had stayed in her home to provide it with food and water.

The discovery occurred on Thursday around one in the morning. It was surprising to learn that the other specimen could not be rescued as it was devoured by a pack of dogs that attacked the deer in the darkness of the early morning.

María Esther Canul Sosa from Progreso took the live specimen to her home in the eastern part of the city to rehabilitate it with milk and ventilation. It was ensured that the deer was in a vulnerable condition, so the authorities were not called until it was observed to be in favorable conditions.

On Friday, a report was made to 911, and personnel from the SSP, municipal police, and ecological police arrived at the woman’s home located in the eastern area of the municipal seat, where her testimony was recorded as part of the respective protocols.

Within the ecological department, veterinarian Diego Novelo Borges was in charge of administering multivitamins to the deer to help its body fully recover. Subsequently, the case was referred to Profepa (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection).

The specimen is a “white-tailed” deer, weighing less than five kilograms, and its age is so young that it can barely stand.

Around three o’clock in the afternoon on the same day, Alejandro Chan, a federal inspector from the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection, received the baby deer from the ecological personnel to provide the necessary care for its proper development and to be returned to its natural habitat as soon as possible.
