There has been another case of aggression by cab drivers against an Uber driver, who was attending a service at the Royalton hotel. Apparently the cab drivers threw a brick at the Uber car, breaking its rear window.
The group of cab drivers from the “Andres Quintana Roo” union, allegedly responsible for the attack, remained at the scene confronting another group of cars belonging to the Uber platform, who arrived to help their colleague. All this caused a blockade in front of the hotel until the police appeared and did the corresponding to clear the place, however, there would be no arrests for these events.
The representative of Uber drivers, Carlos Calzado, pointed to the prosecutor Óscar Montes de Oca for not doing anything about this type of aggressions against the drivers of this platform. Likewise, he lashed out against the State Government.
“When you invent a position to put a member of the union, such as the Directorate of Government, where you name Erika Castillo (former local deputy and daughter of a former cab driver leader), then you put there a ‘hand up’ for impunity in terms of the Taxi Drivers Union,” said Calzado, as reported by Quintana Roo Today.
Águeda Esperilla Soto, spokeswoman for the Uber driver partners, said that although they are not certain of what happened, they do know that going to the Royalton hotel is risky, because the rank-and-file cab drivers are very aggressive.
“That place has had many complaints of armed people, of threats, of many things that they have done, and the authority has done nothing. So, the authorities are responsible for everything that happens, for their omission, for their complicity, for their protection”, he assured.
Violence by cab drivers in Quintana Roo is becoming a daily occurrence not only with Uber operators but also with passengers. At the beginning of June, two cab drivers from the “Lázaro Cárdenas” union in Playa del Carmen were arrested after they got into a scuffle with a passenger in this municipality. The passenger, a national tourist, was accompanied by his son at the time of the altercation and suffered blows to the head.
