With 4,922 rooms, in 73 hotels, and almost 4.3 million visitors, Cozumel was designated as Magical Town and became the fourth destination in Quintana Roo to have such recognition and the 45th nationally.

Miguel Torruco Marqués, Secretary of Tourism, announced that it has now been expanded to 177 new appointments throughout the country, and Quintana Roo, although it had two proposals: Holbox and Cozumel, only the second was recognized.

Nationwide, 123 applications were received, of which 87 met all the documentation and requirements: Geographical conditions and a tourist office; Tourism development plans; Basic services and tourist infrastructure; Tourist attractions, and Magic and color.

In the case of the island of swallows, he was received by the Secretary of Tourism in Quintana Roo, Bernardo Cueto Riestra.

He said that now the promotions will be made in the different fairs and platforms to attract a greater number of visitors, since in addition the brand “Pueblos Mágicos” implies an annual increase of 8% of the Gross Census Added Value of the destination creditor of the appointment.

Badhi Nahum Sleme Flores, director of Tourism and Economic Development of Cozumel, explained that it took several months of work to enter the call, and above all to justify the reasons why they deserved the appointment that included the delivery of a cultural, natural heritage , use and customs.

“Cozumel was identified as a destination for sun and sand, as well as for cruise ships, but it was necessary to strengthen it as a cultural place”.

He explained that it will be on Friday, June 30th, when there will be a first meeting of Magical Towns, to begin the assistance work at the international fair, which will take place in September.

Cozumel has a hotel infrastructure of 4,922 rooms, distributed in 73 lodging centers.

Last year it received one million 27 thousand visitors by air and by ferry.

However, its tourist vocation is the arrival of cruise ships. In this case, the so-called floating hotels brought in 2022, 2.3 million tourists, along with one million 18 thousand crew members, for a total of 3.3 million cruise visitors.

Currently, in Quintana Roo the sites that have the denomination of Magic Towns are: Bacalar, since 2006; as well as Isla Mujeres and Tulum, which obtained recognition in 2015.
