The European Union (EU) warned Russia that there will be consequences if it holds elections in the occupied areas of Ukraine, as they violate the United Nations Charter and the territorial integrity of the country.
The EU bloc stated that it considers these processes, scheduled for September 10th in the four Ukrainian regions annexed during the war, as “illegal”.
It pointed out that it is a clear attempt by Russia to “try to legitimize its military and legal control” and is another “further violation of international law”.
“Russia, its political leadership, and all those involved in organizing these so-called elections will face the consequences of their illegal actions,” emphasized the European External Action Service (EEAS), led by Spanish diplomat Josep Borrell, in a statement.
