MÉRIDA, Yuc., June 2, 2023.- In the framework of World Bicycle Day, which is celebrated tomorrow, Saturday, the municipality of Mérida is working on the intermodality of combining this light vehicle with the various public transportation options, informed the director of Governance of the Mérida City Hall, Ignacio Gutiérrez Solís.
In this context, the municipal official mentioned that in 2019 the first studies that were carried out, prior to the construction and rehabilitation of the bicycle lanes, revealed that a total of that in the city an average of 75 thousand trips were made on bicycles and, of this universe, only 16 percent of cyclists were women.
He pointed out that, with the adaptations of the exclusive stretches for the circulation of this light vehicle, today 32 percent of the cyclists in the city are women and, in order to continue promoting the use of bicycles in the city, the municipal authority is betting on the intermodality with public transportation and the one offered by the municipality.
Within the framework of this worldwide celebration, the municipal official pointed out that interactions must continue, since it is not only a campaign to promote the En Bici program, but also to reach schools, universities, technology centers and wherever the use of this means of transportation can have a radius to be used.
Finally, Gutiérrez Solís mentioned that the idea is that Meridanos bet on micro-mobility, that is to say, that they choose to combine trucks adapted to transport their bicycles, in addition to pedaling short distances of approximately one mile, that is, 1.60 kilometers.
