In Mérida, the joint and coordinated work with all sectors of society has been the cornerstone for stronger strategies and public policies in favor of citizen participation, stated Mayor Renán Barrera Concha during the inauguration of the Inter-Municipal Forum on Citizen Participation, held at the Technological University of the Center in the Municipality of Izamal.
The event, organized by the Secretariat of Citizen Participation and Konrad Adenauer, aims to share good practices and successful experiences regarding mechanisms of citizen participation with other municipalities in the state in order to strengthen participatory democracy.
Accompanied by Julio Sauma Castillo, Secretary of Citizen Participation, and Roberto Rodríguez Sosa, Rector of the Technological University of the Center, Barrera Concha pointed out that his administration has focused on social justice, as it is through social justice that citizen mechanisms can continue to be built, leading to a better quality of life, maintaining balanced order, and integrating all efforts for the orderly and strategic growth and development of our municipalities.
During the workshop, officials from participating municipalities worked in teams to create participatory agendas that promote the development of their municipalities based on the shared experiences of Mérida regarding mechanisms and programs for the participation of youth and women.
In this regard, the participants acknowledged the actions that Mayor Renán Barrera is taking in terms of citizen participation, which have positioned Mérida as one of the municipalities where people are constantly involved in the government’s activities.
The upcoming Inter-Municipal Forums on Citizen Participation will be held in other municipalities within the state during the month of July, with an expected participation of around 300 people in total.
