With the poisoning of six dogs in the eastern part of Yucatán, complaints arise against the authorities demanding that the animal abusers be held accountable for their actions. So far this year, there have been records of 15 dogs and one cat dying solely from poisoning.
It is important to note that the Yucatán Penal Code, in Article 401, establishes that individuals who commit acts considered as animal abuse that put the lives of animals at risk or cause their death will face imprisonment ranging from six months to two years, as well as a fine ranging from 200 to 400 days’ worth of fines.
The most recent case of poisoning attacks against animals occurred in the municipality of Tizimín, where six dogs ingested contaminated food, and two of them were rescued by their owners.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning in the Nueva Esperanza neighborhood, where neighbors witnessed the dogs in agony, rolling on the pavement and in the yards of their homes.
Although the municipal authorities have initiated an investigation, as of the time of writing this note, no results have been reported. Yureli Pech, from the organization “Huellitas Amigas,” urged the authorities to investigate these incidents and called on people to raise awareness.
On March 16th, at least three dogs and a cat died from poisoning on the streets of western Mérida, while on May 12th, in the community of Petectunich, in the municipality of Acanceh, a woman found her pets and others dead due to poisoning.
