Dancers from Kanasín arrive in Progreso

A group of dancers from the municipality of Kanasín, belonging to the folk ballet “Ecos del Mayab,” arrived at the port to showcase their art and interact with the residents of Progreso. Their aim is to make themselves known and excel in their artistic field.

Although the group consists of around twenty dancers, less than ten of them traveled to the port to fulfill their mission and venture into a municipality that also has a rich tradition in folklore, especially Yucatecan folklore.

It was found out that the dance master Iván Esteban Gómez Puch started this project eight years ago. Through his vision, he began to conceive the idea of managing his own group, not only to have a presence in Kanasín and its surrounding communities but also throughout the entire Yucatan Peninsula and even states in the southeastern region.

Progreso was chosen as the arrival point because it currently represents one of the busiest tourist destinations and a port where the landscapes to showcase traditional costumes would be abundant. This would add an even greater value to the artists’ tap dancing demonstrations.

For this Sunday, the young dancers chose to wear costumes from the state of Veracruz, performing the huapango and executing traditional scenes depicting marimba, coffee, and fishing. As a second change, they will showcase the hipil and guayabera costumes to highlight Yucatán.

It was confirmed that the mission of dance and talent is also to keep the younger generations of Kanasín away from all kinds of bad habits. That is why the invitation to join this dance group remains open. Similarly, with the Mexican folklore and the impact of “Ecos del Mayab,” they aim to overcome the paradigms that the Yucatecan community has had regarding Kanasín.

Among the projects of this dance group, there is the upcoming event called “Alegría y Muerte” (Joy and Death), which will take place in their municipality of origin. Other goals include reaching other parts of the interior of Yucatán and other states, including Campeche, where they received their first invitation outside the lands of the Mayab region.
