Edward Cabán, of Puerto Rican origin and with a career of over three decades in the New York Police Department, will make history as the first Latino to lead the largest police force in the world.
“This is an incredible moment not only for the Spanish-speaking community but also for the entire city and the country,” said Eric Adams, the mayor of the city, during the appointment ceremony.
Cabán will be in charge of 36,000 officers and 19,000 civilian employees at a time when 70 percent of New Yorkers feel a strong sense of insecurity, according to a survey by the Siena Research Institute published last week.
