In June 2023, the hotel movement in Yucatan experienced a slight decline compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching an overall room occupancy rate of 50 percent, representing a decrease of two points compared to the same month in 2022.
According to the data provided by the president of the Mexican Association of Hotels in Yucatan (AMHY), Juan José MartÃn Pacheco, hotels in the city of Mérida recorded an occupancy rate of 53 percent in June, which meant a reduction of two points compared to 2022.
In the interior of the state, the occupancy rate was 31 percent, showing a decrease of 3.71 percent compared to the same period last year.
Regarding specific destinations in Yucatan, Mérida led in terms of hotel occupancy, reaching 53 percent, attracting visitors from various tourist segments. The beaches recorded an occupancy rate of 39.75 percent, Izamal 30.88 percent, Valladolid 28.64 percent, and Chichén Itzá 18.84 percent.
MartÃn Pacheco explained that June is usually the month with the lowest occupancy rate in the first semester due to the end-of-term preparations in schools, which leads to a decrease in the flow of local and national tourism.
Despite the decline in June, he highlighted that the first semester of 2023 was positive for the hotel sector both in Mérida and in the interior of the state, and he showed optimism regarding the months of July and August, trusting that there will be a greater influx of tourists benefiting both hotels and businesses that provide services to the tourism sector in Yucatan.
In that sense, the president of AMHY said that for the month of July, hoteliers expect an increase in the percentage of hotel room occupancy, as it is the first month of the summer vacation period, historically the strongest for Yucatan’s tourist destinations.
The figures provided by AMHY are based on a sample survey conducted in 91 hotels throughout Yucatan, which together have 5,555 rooms. Of these, 65 hotels with 4,802 rooms are located in Mérida, while 26 hotels with 753 rooms are scattered in different points of the interior of the state.
