Works with social themes such as inequality, violence, family, among others, are presented in the Thesis + Graft exhibition, featuring students and graduates from the Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts at the University of the Arts of Yucatán (UNAY). The exhibition was inaugurated at the Center for Visual Arts.

The purpose of the exhibition, supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Arts (Sedeculta) and Proyecto Y, is to promote 14 artists. The opening was led by the head of the department, Loreto Villanueva Trujillo, in the presence of the acting rector and academic secretary of UNAY, Karla Berrón Cámara, and the president of the initiative, Catherine Petitgas.

“You are a clear example that art in all its forms has no limits and allows you to develop creativity as a way to visualize our emotions, our environment, and above all, to face new challenges. That is why, from the Ministry of Culture and the Arts, we reaffirm our commitment to providing spaces like these,” expressed the official.

The director of the collective and curator of the exhibition, Óscar García, explained that the aim is to integrate creators into public discourse and cultural venues. He mentioned that the participants will gain curriculum weight and be able to express their concerns, interests, and worldviews necessary to understand their surroundings.

“Celebrating the fact that they already have an educational background, in a way, they go out into the world to present their ideas. That’s how this exhibition at the Center for Visual Arts came to be. In the different themes, obviously from family, anthropology, sociology, psychology itself, the idea is for them to share this dialogue through art in order to confront other ideas and reflect,” he emphasized.

The proposals come from Molly Olvera, Edwin Baas, Andrea Brito, Jairo Campos, Marlin Cortés, HEC RY, Molly Olvera, Ari Malo, Sopa, Yukari Uzeta, Giuliana Aguirre, Gonzalo D. Cerón, David Puc, Fernando Quintero, and Alan Toloza.

The exhibition consists of 35 pieces, including color, manipulated, and black and white photography; watercolor, installation, sculptures, photo books, experimental and artistic videos, cartography, and electroacoustic improvisation.

Thesis + Graft will be open until August 27. It can be visited from Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Admission is free. The CAV is located at 411 Calle 60 between 45 and 47, Centro.
